“A bar mitzvah is a great place to meet someone special precisely because it’s the last place you’d expect that to happen,” says Arnie Singer, founder of Jewish dating site jzoog.com. He notes that you feel more comfortable because your guard is down. “You’re relaxed and pow! You sit next to someone — who hopefully isn’t a blood relative — and swap camp stories over whiskey sours and screwdrivers.”
There’s little that surprises Rachel, a 32-year old bar/bat mitzvah tutor from the Upper West Side who attends several dozen bashes a year and says she’s witnessed plenty of grown-up flirting. Still, even she thought it was chutzpah when she discovered two guests going at it at a student’s downtown bar mitzvah in 2013.
The kid’s aunt and a family friend were “dirty dancing on the dance floor!” recalls a horrified Rachel, who asked her last name not to be used for professional reasons.
